Happy New Year 2023

I hope everyone is well and had a great Christmas

It's Paul here, your local electrician in Bournemouth !

I just wanted to write to you today for a top electrical safety tip

that could save you thousands on those new gadgets that

you may have acquired over the festive season.

What to do in a power cut may be common knowledge to some of my rural customers, but here in BCP it is easy to become complacent as we never really had a significant power cut that's affected all of Bournemouth, Poole, and Christchurch cut since the scrapyard fire under our main power line in Alder Hills back in 2005.

The scrapyard is still there under the pylon feeding our main line.

Here is the story from 2005 below

We have had more local power cuts, which have affected different streets since then.

When the power goes back on, the surges that follows have led to disastrous consequences for our local residents causing many properties to spontaneously combust, filling the property with smoke.

Power surges following a power cut are not isolated incidents, Even the heads of Dorset county council are not immune to the problems power surges cause see the below link

Lighting using LED electronics is one of the most common victims of this and it's becoming a bigger problem with the increase in electronic appliances' vulnerability to surges and an underfunded ageing power grid that's more likely to cause them.

These problems have led to new wiring regulations coming into effect recently that require surge protection devices to be fitted on your consumer unit. The old surge protection extension leads don't usually provide enough protection.

So the top safety tip for those who still don't have hard-wired surge protection in their consumer unit is to unplug everything during a power cut, turn off the boiler and make sure any lights that are LED are switched to the off position and leave the odd one light on, so you can you can see when the power comes back on.

This is because a power surge always usually happens straight after the power comes back on in the street.

Alternatively, another solution is to turn the main switch off at your consumer unit or fuse box and watch your window for the street lights or neighbours' lights to come on.

Reinstate your power 5 minutes after the power cut is over and avoid the surge.

I hope this information has been useful to you all

Here's to a happy and safe New Year
